10 Reasons Why Gay Marriage Should Be Illegal

01) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

02) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

03) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

04) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

05) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britney Spears's 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

06) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

07) Obviously, gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

08) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

09) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

Re-post this if you believe love makes a marriage.

Because I literally only had to wait two minutes before I voted this morning. Though for the record, I would have called off sick today and stood in line ALL DAY and voted if I'd had to. I'm just praying that people make the right choices today.

If not, I'm afraid I will lose hope for this country.

You are probably all getting tired of my political posts, so I won't force you to sit through another right now. However, [livejournal.com profile] georgiaclaire posted a really wonderful blog that pretty much sums up everything I've been trying to say. Except she's done a much better job of it. :P So please, go read this.

And if you think she's half as awesome as I happen to think she is, tell her so!

Obama does NOT wish to take your rights to own a gun away.

He and McCain both voted yes to this:

Official Title of Legislation:

S Amdt 4615 to HR 5441: To prohibit the confiscation of a firearm during an emergency or major disaster if the possession of such firearm is not prohibited under Federal or State law.

Project Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass an amendment prohibiting the use of any funds appropriated in the FY2007 Department of Homeland Security Act from being used to confiscate legal firearms during states of emergency or major disasters. (Sec. 540)

While McCain voted no to this:

Official Title of Legislation:

S.AMDT.362 to S 254: To regulate the sale of firearms at guns shows.

Project Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to adopt an amendment establishing gun show regulations.

Highlights:

- Requires background checks of all buyers of guns at gun shows with at least 50 firearms for sale and 10 firearm vendors present that involve or in some way affect interstate commerce

- Requires individuals to obtain instant check registration before they can legally plan, organize, promote, or operate a gun show

Um, why would you vote no to running a background check on someone trying to buy a gun at a gun show?

Question...

Is there a website where anyone can log on and see what the candidates' voting records are? Like, how they've voted on each issue, etc?

If I hear one more Republican say that George W. is not really a Republican I may strangle them. You know what I think?

Probably going to offend. )

I do lean more one way than the other, and by now most of you who read my LJ undoubtedly know that. But let me make something clear: so far we've never had a canidate that I truly, whole-heartedly believe in, since I've been of voting age (10 years now, btw :P). I think at this point all politicians are talking out their collective butts and not actually doing much to make things better. Will they make things better once they're in office?

I don't know. I hope so. But I'm not holding my breath.

And all in all, my friend [livejournal.com profile] candylandgal sums it up better than I can here.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a politician who put his/her money where their mouth is?

Why Sarah Palin is bad news for women.

Just because someone is a woman doesn't mean they care about things like rape victims, teen mothers, etc.

Because I don't support the aerial hunting of wolves, but I'm pro-choice.

*Snort*

Okay. Let me explain this.

I WORK in the social service field. Every day I see women with kids they can't take care of, kids who are neglected and abused horribly, kids who are homeless and living on the streets. Their parents make terrible choices and who gets screwed? The children.

Do you know how many kids are in the system? Probably not. Most people don't see it. They A) don't care because they don't see it B) they see it, but don't want to be bothered, or C) they care, but don't have time to do anything about it.

So instead they bitch and moan and cry about all the unborn six week old fetuses and how they all have a right to live. I wish the world was that black and white. I really, really do.

The fact is, a lot of people only care that these kids are born and then after that, well, that's not really their problem. After all THEY didn't choose to get knocked up while poor, and be on drugs or be beaten by their husband or raped by their father or neighbor.

Then the same people who cry about the unborn babies want to cut all the funding to programs that HELP children after they're you know, BORN. Like WIC and food stamps and public aid. Because the people who are on these programs are all lazy and don't want to work right? Except, guess who really suffers?

That's right. Again. The children.

Oh well. As long as they're born in the first place, that's ALL that matters!

Now, this isn't intended for everyone. I know there are a lot of pro-life people who actually DO things to help kids that aren't theirs. But a lot of people just want to bitch and complain and have their way and take the high moral ground without DOING anything to actually HELP the situation.

But that's okay. I'll still be here doing MY life's work, making a difference and TRYING to help make the world a better place for the kids who are already here. I'll be here to put out the fires and roll back the floods and clean up the messes irresponsible people make that no one else wants to help out with as they sit and moan about how truly awful THEIR lives are.

But his decision to name Sarah Palin as his VP doesn't leave me feeling any warmer or fuzzier, considering she supports the aerial SLAUGHTER of Alaskan wolves.

Thanks, but no.

The cuts announced by Blagojevich include elimination or reductions totaling $100 million for education-related items, $210 million for social services and $600 million for health care. Among items on the chopping block are services to AIDS patients, sexual assault victims and homeless youth, as well as cuts to public transportation, community colleges, public parks and environmental programs.

Governor Blagojevich has cut 1.5 billion dollars to the state budget--affecting social service programs, healthcare, and homeless kids. Of course, I'm sure none of these cuts will impact Chicago at all. /bitter

I don't know yet how this will affect Dove or Growing Strong. And the Illinois House has a chance to somehow overturn or protest the cuts next week. I don't know how it all works. When it comes down to it, I'm politically stupid, really.

But this isn't about jobs being cut, though that will certainly happen. People in social services aren't in it for the money (trust me on that--I don't even make 25,000 a year--the first three years I worked in social services-part time mind you--I didn't even make HALF that). It's about helping people and changing lives. At least that's what it SHOULD be about.

Trust me when I say we'd also love to put ourselves out of business--that we have managed to eradicate domestic violence and sexual assault. But we haven't. In the years since I've been at Dove, the number of victims we've served has only increased, not decreased. Regardless what you hear on the news, percentages are NOT going down. Not by a long shot.

But we may very well be put out of business because of a political cluster-fuck. Congrats, politicians. Bang up job you've done here.

Just remember that when your kid commits suicide because she was raped and beaten by her boyfriend and had no one to turn to for help--you did this. I hope you're proud.
xtremeroswellia: (Chloe: Humiliated)
I am currently feeling tense and anxious about this whole Illinois budget disaster and how it will possibly screw over my agency avoiding thinking about anything that I don't really have control over. I am sensing my Chlark muse stirring to awakening (because I have spent the last three days watching a bunch of Smallville episodes). I don't even know if I could still *write* Chlark. I've been writing Chlean/Chlam so long now.

Anyone want to toss out some little Chlark or Kaloe ficlet ideas to see if my muse will bite? I'd really like to finish Servatis a Maleficum.

Help.
xtremeroswellia: (DV: He Married Her)
Our state governor, Rod Blagojevich, is playing a really dangerous game with the state politics right now. And people are saying he can't make those cuts, but I'm here to say YES. Yes, he absolutely can and there is no doubt in my mind he'll do it. Why? Well, he did just that last year with the Cease Fire program.

I'm not going to pretend I understand the politics behind it all, but it seems to be to be over petty bullshit because he's power-hungry. And this isn't a good thing for anyone. If these cuts happen, our domestic violence program will lose $300,000 of its funding. One of our sister agencies Growing Strong will lose 90% of their funding, as will ALL sexual assault crisis centers in the state.

You know that that means? Growing Strong will shut down. Most of the sexual assault centers, if not ALL of them, will shut down. Because collectively for the 33 centers in Illinois, there will be a grand spanking total of $600,000 left in the budget. Which, if you do the math, equals less than $20,000 per program. That is not even enough to keep ONE person on staff.

I don't know how much it will effect our DV program if it happens. I'm picturing several staff members being cut and we're already strained and under-staffed now, frankly. I am trying my best NOT to panic, but inside my stomach is doing flips and going "Holy shit this is bad."

I forsee little sleep being had the next few days.

So I log onto yahoo this morning and the first two things I see make my head want to asplode.

One: apparently there was a group of people trying to sell TIGERS in a WAL-MART PARKING LOT. WTF? Seriously?

Two: People protesting gay marriage in California. You know what? If you have nothing better to do than protest other people's happiness, you need MASSIVE DOSES OF THERAPY. MASSIVE.
