Obama does NOT wish to take your rights to own a gun away.

He and McCain both voted yes to this:

Official Title of Legislation:

S Amdt 4615 to HR 5441: To prohibit the confiscation of a firearm during an emergency or major disaster if the possession of such firearm is not prohibited under Federal or State law.

Project Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass an amendment prohibiting the use of any funds appropriated in the FY2007 Department of Homeland Security Act from being used to confiscate legal firearms during states of emergency or major disasters. (Sec. 540)

While McCain voted no to this:

Official Title of Legislation:

S.AMDT.362 to S 254: To regulate the sale of firearms at guns shows.

Project Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to adopt an amendment establishing gun show regulations.

Highlights:

- Requires background checks of all buyers of guns at gun shows with at least 50 firearms for sale and 10 firearm vendors present that involve or in some way affect interstate commerce

- Requires individuals to obtain instant check registration before they can legally plan, organize, promote, or operate a gun show

Um, why would you vote no to running a background check on someone trying to buy a gun at a gun show?

One of the biggest lies the gun lobby and some Republicans have been able to perpetuate is that the commie liberals want to take all guns away. When, as far as I know, it's only the most extreme who want to take all guns away. Most intelligent and sane people realize that it's not about taking guns away, it's about making it harder for people who should not have guns to get those guns. It's about making it harder to get guns no one outside of the organized military needs to own.

I guy I used to work w/ actually said that to me: "Don't vote for Obama; he'll take our guns away." I smiled and nodded like I was dealing w/ a delusional person. Oh wait..I was.

I actually go pretty extreme liberal on this one---I don't know that I would shed a tear if they -would- take all of the guns away, because the average person with lower than average knowledge of how to properly use, store, defend themselves with one, keep it out of the hands of one who shouldn't have their hands on one at all is seriously dangerous with one in their possession.

I think that hunting is only a sport if we give the animals guns, too. And then I'm on their team. ;)

And good gracious, assault and rapid fire weapons? Out of the question that anyone non-military should have access to those 'just because.'

So yeah, I hate the republican stance on this one with a passion----they fear that damned NRA so much that god forbid they vote on a gun bill that makes them look like they're not a gun toting good old boy friend to the gun worshipping sportsman in all of us. *sigh* Never mind that it might actually put a crimp on the kind of easy access to weapons, to the point that the registration process has become laughable and seems way too easy to get around, and keep them out of the hands of someone who obviously has bad intentions and PREVENT a crime ending in the spilling of blood. *rolls eyes*

I only like my guns on law enforcement, to be honest, and even then, most sexy when it is law enforcement official of the fictional kind. ;)

I'm totally with you on both hunting and assault and rapid fire weapons. :)

John McCain voted against S.AMDT.362 because he favored and cosponsored the legislation already submitted and approved in S.AMDT.344, part of which already required an instant background check at gun shows. http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=106&session=1&vote=00134 Click on S. 254 then Amendments and scroll down) Whoever provided you with this information probably knew this, but it didn’t support their agenda to tell you.

Did you know that Joe Biden lied 14 times during the recent VP debate? http://heroesforhillary.wordpress.com/2008/10/03/bidens-14-debate-lies/
Does this bother you at all? With most of the media openly lying for Obama, it is difficult to learn the truth. How can you vote for a politician whose position changes depending upon the audience he is addressing? Do you actually believe that he’s lying to everyone else but you? If elected, Obama will be a disaster to this country in almost every respect. I disagree strongly with McCain on many issues, but at least with McCain (assuming you take the time to filter through the lies) you know what you are getting.

Actually there was no agenda. :P It was just public record on votesmart.org.

Sure it bothers me. Frankly there's not a politician on earth that's trustworthy, imo. I don't think Obama will do the country anymore damage than Bush has done in the last years, and that McCain will continue to do if he is indeed elected. Plus I just don't like McCain or Palin. *shrugs*

"Um, why would you vote no to running a background check on someone trying to buy a gun at a gun show?"

Possibly because it could be unnecessary? Florida, for example, already requires gun dealers at gun shows to run background checks, and I would be surprised if most or all states do not already have this requirement in this day and age, as they should. It's unecessary for the federal government to pass laws on issues that the states handle - it simply clutters the federal budget and encourages useless grandstanding - "look at me, I'm tough on crime, I voted for background checks that already exist"

Hmm. I'm not sure if all the states have that (though you're right, they definitely should). I'll have to research that a little more.
