So it's April which means it's sexual assault awareness and child abuse prevention month, and it's nearly the middle of the month and everything is hectic and I'm frustrated that I haven't made ANY posts regarding these issues until now.
Something I found on RAINN's website (Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network): http://www.rainn.org/statistics/punishing-rapists.html
61% of rapes/sexual assaults are not reported to the police. Those rapists, of course, never serve a day in prison according to a statistical average of the past five years.
*If the rape is reported to police, there is a 50.8% chance that an arrest will be made.
*If an arrest is made, there is an 80% chance of prosecution.
*If there is a prosecution, there is a 58% chance of a felony conviction.
*If there is a felony conviction, there is a 69% chance the convict will spend time in jail.
*So, even in the 39% of attacks that are reported to police, there is only a 16.3% chance the rapist will end up in prison.
*Factoring in unreported rapes, about 6% of rapists — 1 out of 16 — will ever spend a day in jail. 15 out of 16 will walk free.
That's just infuriating.

Date: 2007-04-09 01:30 am (UTC)That's about as bad as finding out last week that here they found out from their 30 year investigation into the NZ police department that cops would sweet rape and sexual assualt complaints under the carpet, and tell victims that what they say happened DIDN'T! And would you believe it, our Police has never had a Code of Conduct. That makes me feel even more sick.......no fuckin' wonder there's so many complaints made against the cops here.
So I echo your statement....that's just infuriating, those statistics, and the crap going on here.
