A: Well, it's when someone writes a story using the characters and/or plots from a TV show, movie, or video game. Generally the person has no affiliation with the actual creators or writers of the fanfic genre he or she is writing for. Of course, fanfic writers don't get paid for their work, either.
Q: What's the purpose of writing fanfiction?
A: For me, it's just a fun hobby that keeps me writing fiction while I'm too busy to work on my own original stories. There is fanfiction for just about every show ever made, as well as for movies, books, games, anime, etc.

A: The thing I love most about fanfiction is that anything can happen in it. If you hated the ending to the last episode of your favorite show, chances are someone else did, too, and chances are you'll be able to find a fanfic where someone's ended the episode differently. Don't like the fact that Mulder's gone from The X-Files? Want to see Mulder and Scully get a happy ending for a change? Do an X-Files fanfic search, and trust me, you'll find a ton of stories about those two ideas. Another great thing about fanfiction is that a lot of it tends to be very well written and believable. Not all of them, of course, but some fanfics I've read I've enjoyed more than certain episodes of shows I like.
