Yeah. Two in a row, guys, because I'm pissed and this needs to be brought to light. For those of you who haven't heard, there was a horrible sexual assault in Texas, which was covered by the New York Times. I'm unclear on how many men assaulted an ELEVEN year old girl. I've read eighteen and I've read twenty-eight. All the men were between 18 and 27 years old.

And if you read that Times article, they make it sound like it's HER fault.

Let's get something clear. An eleven year old CANNNOT consent to sexual activity. It does NOT matter how she was dressed, who she hung out with, etc. It is completely irrelevant.

The hospital worker was upset because of how this would affect the boys' future.

What about how this is going to affect that GIRL'S life? She was gang-raped and BLAMED for it.

I am SO tired of living in a blame-the-victim society. It's time for people to start taking some accountability for their actions. Let's place the blame where it belongs here--on the men who did the crime.

And also on the writer of the Times article. Click here to sign a petition to the paper to issue an apology to the victim, who was the only one who was actually HARMED in this entire mess.

My name is Jamie

My name is Jamie I am but three,
My eyes are swollen
I cannot see,

I must be stupid
I must be bad,
What else could have made
My daddy so mad?

I wish I were better
I wish I weren't ugly,
Then maybe my mommy
Would still want to hug me.

I can't speak at all
I can't do a wrong
Or else I'm locked up
All the day long.

When I awake
I'm all alone
The house is dark
My folks aren't home

When my mommy does come
I'll try and be nice,
So maybe I'll get just
One whipping tonight.

Don't make a sound!
I just heard a car
My daddy is back
From Charlie's Bar.

I hear him curse
My name he calls
I press myself
Against the wall

I try and hide
From his evil eyes
I'm so afraid now
I'm starting to cry

He finds me weeping
He shouts ugly words,
He says its my fault
That he suffers at work.

He slaps me and hits me
And yells at me more,
I finally get free
And I run for the door.

He's already locked it
And I start to bawl,
He takes me and throws me
Against the hard wall.

I fall to the floor
With my bones nearly broken,
And my daddy continues
With more bad words spoken.

"I'm sorry!" I scream
But it's now much too late
His face has been twisted
Into unimaginable hate

The hurt and the pain
Again and again
Oh please God, have mercy!
Oh please let it end!

And he finally stops
And heads for the door,
While I lay there motionless
Sprawled on the floor

My name is Jamie
And I am but three,
Tonight my daddy
Murdered me.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month. Chances are you know someone who's currently in a violent or abusive relationship. It could be a friend, family member, co-worker, classmate, or even you. If you know someone who's being abused, please contact your local domestic violence shelter for information on how you can help, or visit this website:

Outcomes of Abuse and Neglect Impose Significant Costs to Individual and Society

The long-term impacts of childhood maltreatment include higher rates of unemployment, poverty, and use of social services in adulthood, according to a new study by David Zielinski, Ph.D., of the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH) Office of Science Policy, Planning, and Communications.1 The related losses in productivity and tax revenues, increased spending on social services, and potential transmission of abusive behaviors from one generation to the next, suggest major costs to society as well. The results were published online ahead of print on October 8, 2009, in the journal Child Abuse and Neglect.

Another article forwarded to me from work. Thought it was interesting.

Note: I received this in email this morning.

One Abuser, Two Victims

When 9-year-old Beth* was sexually abused by her stepfather, she told the prosecuting attorney that someone else knew about it -- but that he couldn’t talk. She was referring to her beloved cat, Oreo.

Beth explained that Oreo would bravely lie outside her door at night and hiss whenever her attacker appeared. In trying to protect her, the loyal black and white cat also became another victim of violence; Beth’s stepfather would always brutally kick Oreo away from the door.

Beth’s revelation gave the prosecutor an idea. She decided to have Oreo examined by a veterinarian. The results were chilling. Sure enough, poor Oreo had sustained injuries consistent with being physically abused.

When the prosecutor submitted the veterinarian’s report to the jury as evidence showing a pattern of violence in the home, Beth’s allegations gained credibility. In a way, Oreo was able to testify, convincing the jury that the traumatized little girl had been telling the truth.

Beth’s stepfather was convicted and received a long prison sentence. Meanwhile, Beth and Oreo were finally able to experience what every child and animal deserves: a safe home.

Help Empower Victims Like Beth and Oreo

The prosecutor in Beth’s case was Allie Phillips, who now works for American Humane as vice president of our Public Policy Office. She and our staff regularly conduct trainings for attorneys, judges, veterinarians, social workers, domestic-violence counselors and other social services providers on what American Humane calls The Link® between violence to people and violence to animals, increasing awareness of the powerful role it can play in unmasking and preventing abuse.

It’s a vital message -- one that Allie and our Link team are uniquely qualified to spread on behalf of abuse victims everywhere. But she can’t do it alone.

Please help Allie and our team continue to educate others about The Link and stop the cycle of violence affecting innocent people and animals alike.

*This is a true story. However, the child’s name has been changed to protect her privacy.

Tomorrow starts Child Abuse Awareness/Prevention month.

This morning I spent an hour or so at the local courthouse helping put out pinwheels to represent the number of indicated cases of child abuse in my county this past year.

There were 532.

My sister dropped by my office this morning and proceeded to tell me about a case in Belleville, IL (which is about two hours from where I live). Until she told me about it, I hadn't heard anything about it. So I decided to look it up. Here's an article here.

There just aren't even words.

She tried to drown her baby IN THE TOILET. They found the bones of another infant she had in 2007 in her dresser drawer, and they let her KEEP CUSTODY of this baby? WTF? I mean, seriously. What. The. Fuck.

I swear, if I knew I could get by with it, I'd be a vigilante.

Supreme Court Rejects Death Penalty for Child Rape.

You know what I have to say to that?

"Still, Kennedy concluded that in cases of crimes against individuals — as opposed to treason, for example — "the death penalty should not be expanded to instances where the victim's life was not taken.""

So raping a child, or in MOST cases, MULTIPLE children, ruining their lives and destroying their ability to trust themselves or other people, and shattering their capability of EVER feeling TRULY safe is less of a crime than treason?

You know what, Supreme Court?

Go fuck yourselves.

One of the people who spoke at the child abuse conference today was a man named John Fischer. He is a convicted pedophile, and has been on parole for the last 18 years. In the course of his life, he admitted to abusing 52 boys between the ages of 3 and 16.

One of his victims later committed suicide, another was killed in a car accident while driving drunk and high with friends.

John Fischer is supposedly "reformed."

I have some things to say regarding Strikeout 2007 and it's probably not going to make me the most popular person around here.

Some thoughts. )

People make me sick. Who the hell would nominate a child molester for a music award?

OH, wait! The same people who allow a rapist to introduce Usher.

On a LJ community that I belong to (an anti-rape one), someone posted a link to a pedophile's website, expressing her outrage on his talk of "how to have sex with a child" where it's fun and safe for all involved, even if the child is NINE years old. NINE YEARS OLD? What the fuck? I'm so pissed right now I can't see straight. I'm going to write this sick fuck an email when I calm down, and then I'm going to find out how to report his sick fucking ass to authorities.

Are you kidding me? People are holding candle light vigils for Michael Jackson? What?

Yeah, yeah. Innocent until proven guilty and all that crap.

This isn't the first accusation against the man. His entire house is filled with toys and rides and games--every child's dream. He's admitted he -sleeps- in the same bed with the kids that stay with him. An adult male sleeping in bed with a bunch of very young children. Does this not seem WEIRD to anyone else? Cause I'm pretty sure if he wasn't a big star with lots of popular songs, people would say he was a sick pervert.

Not to mention the two secret rooms in his house--one containing hundreds of unmarked video tapes, the other with walls plastered with pictures of young kids all OVER them. Some of the kids had their shirts off. Hello, pedophile?

But yeah, let's pray for his innocence rather than the poor kids he's, in my mind at least, undoubtedly damaged for life.

What is Speak?

I've wanted to create this section of 'Only Time' since I opened the site nearly two years ago. But I wasn't ready. Wasn't ready to be honest about my life.

But now I am. Or at least, I think I am.

Speak. )

Disclaimer: Not mine. Don't sue. The song that Liz and Max dance to is "Take My Hand" by Dido. It is not mine either. It is on her album, "No Angel."

Rating: R for language, adult situations, and sexual content

Spoilers: Up through "Blood Brothers" and some for the book series

Author's Note: Well, after writing the first nine parts of this, I needed to do something a bit lighter to keep me from getting depressed, so this part (or chapter) is a bit less intense than the last nine. Until the end, anyway....
